The Brief
RentAxis runs a property portfolio in one place: units and leases, online rent collection, maintenance and the accounting behind all of it. It started as Rent Tracker, an internal tool for Boston Appraisal Service, and grew into a SaaS product any property manager can run their business on.
I worked on it as a full-stack developer on the team, across Laravel and React. My parts were the accounting core, the portals for staff, tenants and contractors, and the imports that bring a company's existing records in from spreadsheets.
What I Built
- 01
The Accounting Core
The chart of accounts, journal entries and bank reconciliation: the part of the product where every number has to agree with every other number.
- 02
Three Portals
Separate portals for the property team, tenants and contractors: one product with three very different users and three different ideas of what it is for.
- 03
Spreadsheet Imports
Imports for 12 kinds of records, so a company can bring years of existing data in from spreadsheets instead of retyping it.
- 04
Full Stack, on a Team
Laravel on the server and React through Inertia in the interface, working alongside the other developers on the team.
The Story
The Challenge
Turn a tool shaped around one company's habits into a product any property manager can run a portfolio on, from multi-family buildings to Section 8 leases, with books that stay correct.
The Approach
Laravel and React joined through Inertia. Money is modeled the way accountants model it, with a chart of accounts, journal entries and bank reconciliation, and integrations with QuickBooks Online, Plaid and Google Maps connect it to the tools managers already use.
The Outcome
Launched in January 2026 after six months of development, with separate portals for the team, tenants and contractors, 20+ ready-made reports and imports for 12 kinds of records.
